What is a heat pump?A heat pump is a system in your home that extracts heat from one place and transfers it to another. Two examples of this technology include refrigerators and air conditioners. Unlike an air conditioner, a heat pump cycle is reversible meaning it provides heat in the winter and cooling in the summer. What is the difference between ductless and ducted?DUCTLESS: A unit installed in your home that has interior heads mounted on your wall where the heating and cooling will be dispersed. These indoor heads are connected with refrigerant piping to a unit that sits outside your home. As the refrigerant liquid moves through the pipes, it is either heated or cooled depending on your settings. The fan inside the indoor head blows the warm or cool air into your home for continuous comfort. This is a more common approach for homes that have already been built, that homeowners would like to increase efficiency in heating their homes. DUCTED: Mechanically, the Ducted system is similar to Ductless applications, however the unit installed in your home requires duct work to carry heating and cooling throughout your home, as there are no indoor heads mounted on the walls. This is a more common approach in new builds or when clients are switching from forced air oil systems to heat pumps.

Does a heat pump control humidity in my home?Heat pumps can help reduce humidity in your home by operating in air conditioning or dry mode. Heat pumps do not have the ability to increase the humidity in your home. For ducted systems, you can add humidifiers and dehumidifiers for total humidity control.

What is the warranty on my heat pump unit?Warranties vary based on the manufacturer. Daikin carries 12 years on compressors and parts, and 10 years on labour on most of their Ductless Systems. Warranty may change for different model numbers. To receive this warranty, the product must be registered online. Presidential honors 1 year labour warranty regardless of manufacturer warranty on all residential installations.

Do I have to register my heat pump?Like most appliances, heat pump manufacturers require you to register your product to receive full warranty. Head over to the Register Your Product page and fill out the form. If your unit qualifies, we will send you your registration certificate right away.

How do you control a heat pump?Heat pumps are controlled by a thermostat. Some are wall mounted and others are controlled by a remote.

What kind of maintenance does my heat pump require?INDOOR: For both ductless and ducted, your indoor unit requires you to clean and/or replace air filters. Manufacturers recommend these to be cleaned at least every 3 months. The cleaner your filter, the more efficient your system will operate. For a ductless heat pump, the filter is located under the front cover of your indoor unit. Simply open and remove your filter. Gently rinse your filter in warm water and allow to dry before placing back in the unit. Click here to watch how to do this. For ducted systems, your filter is located at the air handler typically found in your mechanical room. OUTDOOR: For both ductless and ducted, your outdoor unit needs to be clear of all debris including snow, ice, and leaves etc. For affordable maintenance packages, please contact info@presidentialventilation.ca

Do I need a back up source of heat?Yes, you do need a back up source of heat. There are two reasons: Should your heat pump ever fail, your back up will ensure your house stays warm even in cooler temperatures. Heat pumps extract heat from the outdoor air. As the temperate drops, your heat pump may require more support to heat your home. There are heat pumps on the market that operate up to -30 degrees, however as temperature drops, the amount of heat that is dispersed also drops. Daikin cold climate series of heat pumps will perform at 100% capacity at -15 degrees.
